Skin Cancer Awareness Month: Why Early Detection Matters

Each year, May is recognized as Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a timely reminder of the importance of protecting our skin—the body’s largest and most visible organ. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, yet when caught early, it is also one of the most treatable.
At CoCo Dermatology and Cosmetics, we believe that skin care is more than cosmetic—it’s preventive, proactive health care. Our board-certified dermatology team is deeply committed to early detection, personalized treatment, and patient education using the latest medical and cosmetic dermatologic advancements.
The Three Major Types of Skin Cancer
Understanding the types of skin cancer can help you identify warning signs and know when to seek care:
1. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
- Frequency: Accounts for ~80% of all skin cancer cases
- Appearance: Pearly or waxy bumps, flat scar-like areas, or open sores that may crust or bleed
- Behavior: BCC rarely metastasizes, but if left untreated, it can cause significant local tissue damage
- Common Locations: Face, neck, ears, scalp, shoulders—areas most exposed to UV light
- Prognosis: Excellent with early detection. Treatment options include surgical excision, Mohs surgery, cryotherapy, and topical therapies.
2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
- Frequency: Second most common type
- Appearance: Red, scaly patches; raised growths with central depressions; open sores that may bleed
- Behavior: More likely than BCC to spread, especially in immunocompromised individuals
- Common Locations: Face, lips, ears, neck, and backs of hands
- Prognosis: Highly treatable when identified early. May require surgical removal or radiation in more advanced cases.
3. Melanoma
- Frequency: Less common but far more dangerous
- Appearance: Irregularly shaped moles or lesions with varied color and uneven borders
- Warning Signs (ABCDE Rule):
- Asymmetry: One half doesn't match the other
- Border: Irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges
- Color: Multiple colors or uneven distribution
- Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)
- Evolving: Changes in size, shape, color, or new symptoms like bleeding or itching
- Prognosis: Excellent in early stages; aggressive if untreated. Treatments may include excision, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies.
Why Early Detection is Critical
Skin cancers—especially melanoma—can spread if not diagnosed promptly. When detected early, the five-year survival rate for melanoma exceeds 99%, but this rate drops significantly once the cancer has metastasized.
That’s why regular skin checks, both at home and with a board-certified dermatologist, are essential to catching cancer in its earliest stages. Look for new, unusual growths, or any change in existing moles or spots.
